As part of our Bihar Chhath Puja Series, we visited our friend’s home in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, to witness the Kharna rituals—a day of purity, devotion, and heartfelt family traditions that unite faith and community.
What is Kharna in Chhath Puja?
🌙 The second day of Chhath Puja, known as Kharna, represents self-purification and preparation for the next two days of intense fasting and worship.
On this day, devotees:
- Take a holy bath and prepare Kheer (sweet rice pudding) and Roti (flatbread) without salt or onion/garlic.
- Offer the prasad to Surya Dev and Chhathi Maiya after sunset.
- Begin a 36-hour nirjala fast (without food or water) that continues till the final morning arghya (sunrise offering).
